We joined with the rest of the theatre community yesterday in mourning the passing of Ellen Stewart, the legendary founder of La MaMa E.T.C. Our condolences go to Ellen’s entire family and the La MaMa community, even as we celebrate her life and profound impact on the field.
The New York Times obituary lists many of her astonishing accomplishments – 3,000 productions ranging from Godspell to Torch Song Trilogy; developing the early work of playwrights like Sam Shepard, Maria Irene Fornes, and Adrienne Kennedy; spotlighting actors from Al Pacino to Bette Midler; and keeping the doors open for 40 years, introducing most performances herself.
La Mama’s website lists visiting hours, and services will be held at10:00AM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, 5th Ave. at 51st St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to La MaMa E.T.C. at 74A East 4th St., NY, NY 10003 or www.lamama.org.
