Restore the South Carolina Arts Commission

As you’ve probably heard by now, South Carolina Governor Nikki R. Haley has issued line-item vetoes to the South Carolina budget and has, thereby, eliminated state funding for the arts.

TCG urges restoration of these funds and action by artists and arts organization in South Carolina to ask the state legislature to restore these funds. The State House is scheduled to return to the state capitol for a vote on July 17th and the State Senate on July 18th.  Each House would have to muster a 2/3 vote in order to override the Governor’s vetoes. The Arts Commission is unable to operate unless the state legislature votes for restoration.

These are tough economic times and so elected officials at the state and federal levels are looking for cuts in order to balance budgets. Don’t be discouraged from participating – this is a process and we all need to take a few minutes to help our elected officials understand the value of our work to our communities – economic, educational and intrinsic value – they hear from other sectors and they need to hear from the arts community! And, don’t assume that others will send emails and make phone calls – there needs to be an outcry from the arts community in South Carolina!

We urge you to visit the South Carolina Arts Alliance website for more information about message and how to participate.
